In earlier days, lehengas were shorter skirts, sutured till the ankle and wrapped around the midriff. The ethnical community used to wear similar short lehengas. Lehengas were generally sutured between the knee and the ankle.
The middle-class wore shorter lehengas whereas the richer class wore veritably long lehengas. Depending on preference, the lehengas were sutured ankle-length or left flowing in the ground which adds to the complication.
What are the sections of a lehenga?

The dupatta is generally put away on one side of the lehenga and can be dropped across the shoulder or taken over the head in a traditional manner.
